TEXAS THEATRE

WHAT PEOPLE are SAYING
- “…one of Dallas’ most treasured historic movie houses, The Texas Theatre… is rising from the ashes of neglect to emerge as the city’s only truly independent art house.”
Peter Simek, D Magazine - “It is an encouraging sign that Dallas may finally have the kind of fearless repertory independent movie house (along the lines of Austin’s Alamo or New York’s Film Forum) that it has lacked for so long.”
Peter Simek, D Magazine - “I have screened my film all over the United States and throughout the world and the Texas Theatre ranks among the most impressive historic theaters I have played.”
Award winning filmmaker Bradley Beesley (“Okie Noodling,” “Christmas on Mars,” “Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo”) - “Over the years various groups have rescued the Texas Theatre from the wrecking ball. Now (Aviation Cinemas) are creating a positive buzz because they have the expertise, the vision and the energy to transform the aging lady into a Dallas film buff paradise.”
Kirk Dooley, Dallas Morning News - “Making (their) own films and owning the theater in which to show them is a throwback to the man who built the Texas Theatre in 1931: Howard Hughes.”
Elaine Liner, Dallas Observer
ABOUT the TEXAS THEATRE
Financed by Howard Hughes in 1931, the historic Texas Theatre was once the largest suburban theater in Dallas. Put in the national spotlight after the capture of President John F. Kennedy assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, the theater would undergo years of pitfalls, abandonment, and even a fire that nearly destroyed its entire interior. Loved and partially restored by the Oak Cliff Foundation, the theater finally found its home with Aviation Cinemas, Inc., a small group of Texas filmmakers, in August of 2010. It’s mission: to maintain the history of the Texas Theatre while improving the moviegoer experience.
The Texas Theatre is a truly independent arthouse and repertory cinema.
